Our Philosophy
We feel that spending time away from the distractions of the modern world is the only chance most of us get to truly relax and reflect on our lives.
In the wilderness, the space that was occupied by phones, television, vehicles and computers is filled with the spiritual energy that wild places have to offer.
It is our privilege to offer an experience after which we hope you return to your daily life in a happier and more effective frame of mind.
Our waste, water, and energy plan is well managed and we can continue to use the area around the hut with no appreciable impact.
Your guides will help you to walk softly on the land, telling you which vegetation is most susceptible to a careless footstep, how to observe wildlife without disturbing it, and how to treat the sensitive water systems of the high alpine.
Because our most important priority is the integrity of the land base, our facilities are comfortable, but not luxurious. There are no septic systems or running water. Still, we think you will find more than enough consideration for your comfort to make this holiday a very rewarding one.
Please come on our trips expecting to truly experience the place you are visiting.
We do not rush through our trips to get to camp or hut.
We try to savor the days spent out of doors and will have comfortable lunches and time for photos and flowers.
Because of this, our groups are made up of all abilities and experience levels and we think the time you have here will be richer as a result.
Thank You Ian and Tay
| Our History
Wells Gray Chalets were established in 1988. The hut system was built to get more people into the spectacular backcountry of Wells Gray Park, a park that sees very little use. A well-run hut system is considered to be the most environmentally friendly way to access the sensitive alpine regions. Ecologically Sensitive Access The hut-to-hut system is run to minimize any impact your visit might have in these wild places. All of the waste, water, energy and impact is carefully managed to the highest standard. We think that you will agree that after twelve years of operation, the terrain around the hut system is still wild and untouched.
Great Guides Your guides are highly qualified professionals, each with many years of experience as wilderness guides. Not only are they excellent leaders, they are also good cooks, competent naturalists, and fun to be with.
Wells Gray Park This park is a one of the best-kept secrets in Canada. It will amaze you with its wild beauty and diversity. The fact that this park encompasses a 1.5 million acre watershed and completely protects the Clearwater River basin makes it a unique ecosystem. We are the only hut system in a park in B.C.
Summer wildflowers The area boasts the best alpine wildflower meadows that you will ever see.
Winter Snowpack The Cariboo Mountain snow pack is famous throughout the world. Our base gets above three meters every winter and sometimes to five meters. The snow tends to come in many small storm cycles which means more high quality powder added on a consistent basis.
